A Slower Pace

The pace here is set by the land, not the clock.

Amish horse and buggy

Horse-and-buggy traffic on country roads, small-town Sunday closures, and two-lane roads that wind past cornfields instead of strip malls — this is a county where you slow down because the landscape asks you to, not because you have to. Amish farms and farm stands are part of daily life, not a novelty. Since 1940, an Amish farming community has called the Charlotte Hall/ Mechanicsville/ Loveville area home — the first Amish settlement outside Pennsylvania in a century. You’ll pass working farms, roadside stands, and an enclosed Amish produce market on Route 5 and Route 235, selling produce, baked goods, quilts, and flowers straight from the source.
